Sketchfab profile launched!

I recently launched a profile on Sketchfab, check it out!

Sketchfab is an amazing repository of 3D models –of rocks, of minerals, of outcrops, of museum artifacts, of video game characters — anything you can imagine!

After learning about Sketchfab at the Structural Geology and Tectonics 2018 Forum sponsored by SERC and the National Science Foundation, during the Structure from Motion Workshop led by Ramon Arrowsmith (ASU) and Chris Crosby (UNAVCO) I’ve started building my own 3D models of rocks, minerals, and landscapes, and building collections for teaching.

The two models I’ve made so far are built using Agisoft PhotoScan Pro (trial period) using pictures taken with my smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S7). I’m working on refining how I take pictures to improve model textures and getting a better handle on what can and cannot be reasonably imaged for modeling. My main focus thus far is on hand samples to be used for teaching about rock textures in Petrology labs.

Not only can you upload your own models, you can also make collections of models created by others! My igneous textures collection is well in development, and an extrusive-specific collection is in the works.

Keep an eye out for upcoming collections:

  • Minerals & Mineral Properties
  • Metamorphic Rocks
  • Structural Geology
  • Cam’s Personal Rock Collection
  • Geologic Outcrops
  • Road Trip Sights
